At all times, you must make use of
the power of skillful means and the
wisdom of applied practice.
An eminent teacher once said, "A day without work is a day without food." There
is inside work and outside work. Inside work is finding our true selves;
outside work is helping others. Zen tradition has always flourished in working
communities that sustain themselves and grow through together-action in
everyday life. Work practice provides opportunities to learn and teach new
skills, serve the community and temple, and share in our practice. Many kinds
of volunteer service are welcome, including carpentry, painting, maintenance,
gardening, cooking, and cleaning.
